Start a beauty business, state by state
Beauty licensing is state law. The board that licenses you, the hours you train, the establishment license your space needs and the taxes you file are all set by your state, so this site is organized by state first. Each live state hub links a full guide for every beauty business type we cover there.
Live state guides
Texas
One regulator, TDLR, for hair, barbering, esthetics, nails and lashes. Six guides live: hair salon, barbershop, nail salon, lash studio, esthetics and salon suite.
State hub liveFlorida
Two boards inside DBPR: the Board of Cosmetology and the Barbers' Board. Six guides live: hair salon, barbershop, nail salon, lash studio, esthetics and salon suite.
States in production
New states are researched from the board's own pages before anything is published, in the order set by our build plan: population and growth first. A state appears here only when its full cluster is ready, never as a thin page filled from directories.
California
The Board of Barbering and Cosmetology state: cosmetologist and barber licensing, establishment rules and the $800 a year LLC franchise tax that shapes California planning.
Georgia
One combined board for cosmetology and barbers, with some of the longest training hours in the researched states.
North Carolina
A separate barber board and a cosmetic art board, with board published exam standards worth explaining properly.
Arizona
A combined barbering and cosmetology board, a lash registration model, and 1,500 hour cosmetology training.
New York
Licensing through the Department of State rather than a beauty board, under the Appearance Enhancement framework.
How a state gets added
- Read the board first. The research starts from the state's own statutes, board pages and fee schedules, the same standard described in how each guide is built.
- Build the hub and every type guide together. A state launches with its hub plus hair salon, barbershop, nail salon, lash studio, esthetics and salon suite guides, so nothing on the hub links to an empty promise.
- Feed the national tables. The new state's license names, hours and regulators join the national topic comparisons, marked researched only when the board's own text backs them.
